UC Davis Forensic Science master's grad Emily Helmes poses in her cap and gown

Securing an Early Job to Launch a Forensic Science Career

Emily Helmes is grateful for the skills and experiences she gained in UC Davis’ Forensic Science Master’s Program, which helped her secure a position as a quality control chemist at a drug manufacturing company. “My education and research gave me experience with instruments that people normally don’t get until they work in their first industry job.”

Now months into her job, Emily reflects on the hands-on experiences and inclusive environment that contributed to her success in finding a job before graduation. “This program sets you up to have a successful career as a forensic scientist or a chemist. I use every part of my education from this program.”

Why did you decide to pursue a master’s degree in forensic science and why did you choose the UC Davis program?

I decided to pursue a master’s degree because I have always seen myself pursuing higher education to give myself the upper hand in the job market, which is very competitive these days. I also wanted to do research and work with experts in the field. UC Davis gave me access to amazing mentors and teachers that currently work in the field and want to guide their students to success.

What were your goals going into the program?

The program fostered an amazing environment for its students. With the small class sizes, it allowed for students to create friendships and network with the professors and guest speakers. A few students got to do research in the same labs as each other, which allowed us to use each other as resources when we got stuck in our research.

What have been some of your most valuable takeaways in the program so far?

The hands-on experience in the crime lab was super valuable. Spending time in the environment that you want to be in gives you the excitement and motivation that’s needed to get there. The classes in the program also give you a very good set of basic skills that will set you apart from other graduates.

Did you encounter any challenges during the program, and if so, how did you overcome them?

The most challenging part of the program was my research, but my co-workers, classmates and my PI were constantly helping me overcome any obstacles I ran into. My family was also very supportive when I felt stuck.

How do you see this program helping you achieve your long-term career goals?

This program gives me the education level that a senior-level job will demand once I’ve gained some experience in the field.

Would you recommend this program?

I would recommend this program to anyone who loves forensic science or wants to have hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation that you don’t get from other programs.
